Study Finding Tree Beans Offers the Main Benefits When Diets to Lose Weight
May 5, 2021Combining trees such as walnuts and cashew nuts into a calorie deficit diet can help the diet lose weight and prevent it, at least according to a new study from UCLA. This study involves placing two groups of people who are overweight and obese in the diet, one tree beans assigned as part of their food and other assigned pretzels. Although both groups lose weight, tree bean groups experienced several additional benefits.
The study involved 95 adults aged 30 to 68. All participants held a diet that reduced their calorie intake to 500 calories less than their resting metabolism level, meaning they would lose weight as a result of a diet. The 12-week diet participants were followed by maintaining their weight for 12 weeks after that.
The big difference between the two groups is snacks assigned: one group assigned to eat 1.5oz from mixed nuts every day, while others receive similar pretzel snacks. Both groups lose their leading and similar weight for a period of 12 weeks and maintained around the same losses for the next 12 weeks.
However, there are several important benefits in groups given mixed tree beans instead of pretzels, including a higher level of fullness ‘significantly’ compared to the given pretzel. Few fewer people come out of the study in the tree bean group too, plus these participants have a ‘significant’ heartbeat decreasing from the research line compared to the pretzel group.
In explaining these results, the main research researcher Zhaoping Li, PhD, MD, said:
Tree beans (almonds, brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamias, pecans, pine nuts, pistachios and walnuts) are a source of protein, healthy fat and fiber. This makes them very satisfying and may be the main reason why we see less weight gain in the tree bean group during heavy maintenance, and the dropout rate is much lower than the pretzel group.
