Why do my eyes hurt when i wake up in the morning?

Waking up with a red face or eyes that feel heavy or sore, why do my eyes hurt when I wake up in the morning? This is a common question many people who suffer from chronic eye problems ask. First, let me tell you what causes your eyes to hurt. When you go to sleep at night, the muscles and tissues in your eyes relax and sometimes they sag. While they are relaxing and sagging, tiny blood vessels beneath the retina move and leak blood into the tissue of your eyes.

Now when you wake up, the eyes begin to stretch back due to the loosening of the muscles and the tissue in the eyes. As you begin to wake, these blood vessels start to leak again, but this time they become bigger and larger. You may also notice that your vision is blurred or that you can see some spots where there was none before you went to bed. These blood vessels may also be red, swollen and irritated. When you go to bed with these symptoms, you could have an inflammation or a venous condition called “rugamentitis”.

As you can see, when you go to bed, your body is in REM sleep. While in this deep sleep state, the body does not have to use its defenses to protect the eyes like it has to guard against infection. When you wake up in the morning, the eyes are usually in a very sensitive state due to the amount of damage that has been done during the night. This may make you feel like asking yourself, “why do my eyes hurt when I wake up in the morning?” However, if you learn what has caused the damage, you can help reverse it before it gets out of control.
